Robert Dick and Stephan Haluska re-explore the long established flute and harp duo in Crop Circles, through improvisation and creative approaches to their respective instruments. Robert and Stephan’s musical landscape is wildly colorful, created with Robert’s array of flutes, voice, jaw harps and game calls and Stephan’s harp, prepared with an assortment of materials and objects. The duo's conception of the emotional meaning of their music gives free rein to imagination, unburdened by the past.

O Tree, Eat the Fish opens Crop Circles with vocalized flute melodies and buzzing harp glissandos before the title track focuses on breathy flute tones and harp-body percussion. Each track defines new timbral areas through the entirety of Crop Circles, rejecting the traditional flute and harp music, but perhaps none more than in Narcissism Meets Necessity. Narcissism Meets Necessity opens with Robert’s jaw harp and continues with duck calls, and whistling sounds before returning to this opening instrument, all while Stephan produces sharp rattling textures of harp strings snapped against an aluminum mixing bowl, pressed against the instrument.

The flute and harp duo has been an enduring musical pairing in European classical music since the 1700s. Mozart’s “Concerto for Flute and Harp in C Major”, written in 1788, is the standard bearer for its genre. For the most part, the “Concerto” and the repertoire it defined may be characterized as long on charm and not much else.
